Westerly Spares Help

By "Westerly spares" we mean parts which ideally come from the same original supplier and to the original design. However, after a number of years many suppliers have gone out of business, or no longer produce the same model or part. Wherever possible we source from the original supplier, but otherwise get parts made by other suppliers to the same design, or obtain the nearest compatible item. For the few parts which would have been made in-house, such as GRP items, we use other reputable specialist companies to supply.

If you do not own a Westerly you may find the part you require in the list below, as we are increasingly finding that many of our spares are fitted on other makes of yachts. We have supplied parts for Moodys, Sadlers, Southerlys, Leisures, and many European makes. If it is not shown here, please contact us as we are happy to investigate the availability of new parts which we have not been asked for before.

All our prices are INCLUSIVE OF 20% VAT (applicable in EU only). If you are ordering from a non-EU country (including the Channel Islands) VAT will automatically be deducted when you order. Delivery, if required, is extra according to weight.

Our Brokerage Service

We appreciate that many people think that using a broker is expensive and not really necessary when there are many websites where you can advertise your boat for little or no cost. But this has its limitations. There are many advantages in using a broker, especially one which specialises in in your make of yacht. Many people in the market for a boat do not know exactly what they are looking for, and are not familiar with the features of various models. This is particularly true with Westerlys, because there were so many models built over 37 years. Many potential buyers will be aware of the reputation of the brand, but depend on us to identify the model which suits their sailing requirements and budget. Other potential buyers will say they are looking for a particular make of boat, but when they describe the type of sailing they wish to do, we can persuade them that they should instead consider the advantages of a Westerly.

Our service can be summarised as follows:

Initial stages
Having been approached by a vendor, we make an appointment to meet on the boat where we can advise on the price to ask based on our knowledge of what particular models are currently changing hands for. This information is only known to brokers who regularly sell that model. During our visit we take a comprehensive range of photos. The vendor provides us with an inventory and signs a Listing Agreement agreeing to our commission rate which will apply if and when we find a buyer. The broker will also need to have sight of documentation to prove the the vendor has clear title to sell the boat.

Marketing
We then list the boat on our website together with inventory and photos. We subscribe to Yachtworld.com which we believe is the biggest yacht sales site. We also put the boat in our shop window which has a good passing trade. We advertise in Yachting Monthly, Practical Boat Owner and Sailing Today on a regular basis.
We have a large database of potential buyers and we would search it to find possible matches, then contact those customers so that they are the first to be aware that the boat is for sale.

Enquiries and viewings
Because the inventory is on our website there is less requirement these days to send specifications by post, but there are still people without a computer for which this service is necessary. We handle all phone and email enquiries where further information is required. When a viewing is required, we arrange to meet clients at the boat or take them out to boats on moorings in our company launch. This can happen many times before a buyer is found, and is one of the main advantages in using a broker. The broker can also handle any adverse criticism of the boat which the owner may not wish to hear!

Offers
Any offer received is passed on even when we know it will not be acceptable. The vendor may wish to advise us of his "bottom line", which of course may be reduced if a buyer is not forthcoming. The broker can advise whether an offer is reasonable in the current marketplace, but the decision is always the vendorís.

Contract and survey
Having agreed an offer, it is invariably subject to survey, and both purchaser and vendor sign a contract to this effect and the purchaser pays the broker a 10% deposit to take the boat off the market, which is placed in our Clients Call account. The broker can assist with making survey arrangements, but the choice of surveyor is down to the purchaser as are all associated costs. The contract covers the situation where the purchaser decides to withdraw following unacceptable findings in the survey. This is quite a rare event but the deposit is refunded in full without delay. More usually, when unforseen defects are reported in the survey, the purchaser will ask for a price reduction. This is often for more than is acceptable to the vendor, so again the broker has to use his negotiation skills to reach a compromise.

Final stages
Having finalised the selling price the broker makes out a Bill of Sale for the vendor to sign. In the meantime the buyer has to provide the balance of the purchase price, which again is paid into the Clients Call account. Normally this is by cheque which clears in 4 working days. Having established that the funds have cleared the broker sends the vendor the statement and cheque for the proceeds. The purchaser receives the Bill of Sale made out to himself, together with all other documentation that exists on the boat.
